Using Mobile Data instead of traditional Broadband

Using Mobile Data instead of traditional Broadband

Do you need internet for your home or business, but don't want to get locked into a contract? Mobile Data might be the way forward for you.

What is Mobile Data?

Mobile data is a form of internet connection provided by Mobile networks primarily for accessing the internet on your smartphone when out and about. There are many different types of mobile data packages and some that come without a contract. Bear in mind however, that most mobile data plans will come with a data usage cap. If you are a heavy internet user, this may not be a suitable alternative for you.

How can I use Mobile Data without a smartphone?

Its easy to use mobile data without a smartphone, however it will come with a one-off cost to buy the equipment needed. See the next section (What do I need to get up and running with Mobile Data Broadband).

What do I need to get up and running with Mobile Data Broadband?

  1. First off, you will need a 4g or 5g compatible Wi-Fi router to get started. You can purchase 4G data routers online from Amazon for around £50.
  2. Next you will need a sim card with a data plan. We suggest GiffGaff, as they have reasonably priced data plans that are contract free and they run on the O2 network meaning most areas should receive good signal.

Which network should I go for?

There are several network providers in the UK that offer mobile data, but ultimately it will depend on two main factors, Signal strength in your area & Price. We suggest checking the available signal in your area on each providers website before deciding which provider to use. We have provided links below to the major networks coverage checkers, simply enter your postcode to check the signal strength in your location:

What data plan is right for me?

This question is a little more tricky to answer, as it will depend on your data usage. If you are a light internet user, just checking and sending emails with some light google searching along the way, you could reasonably expect to go through around 20GB of data per month. If you are a heavy user that streams, this could easily increase to 100+GB in a month.  If you choose to get your data from GiffGaff, we would recommend going for a higher plan in your first month, monitor your data usage, and then amend your plan for the next month as necessary.

Setting up your Mobile Wi-Fi

Setting up your Mobile Data should be as simple as activating your new Sim online, pop it into your 4G router and power everything up. Your mobile sim will automatically connect to the network and install any services needed on the router to access the network. Form here you just need to connect your devices to the router's Wi-Fi signal and you're good to go!
